The 4Cs are the universal standard for evaluating diamond quality. Understanding these characteristics will empower you to make a confident purchase, whether you're buying an engagement ring or a special gift.
Cut: The Most Important C
Cut determines how well a diamond reflects light. It's not about the shape, but about the precision of angles, proportions, and symmetry. A well-cut diamond will display maximum brilliance, fire, and scintillation.
- Excellent/Ideal: Maximum brilliance and fire
- Very Good: Nearly as much brilliance at a lower price
- Good: Reflects most light, good value
Color: Less is More
Diamond color actually refers to the lack of color. The GIA grades diamonds on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are the most valuable, but near-colorless diamonds (G-J) offer excellent value.
Clarity: Nature's Fingerprints
Clarity measures the presence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface blemishes. Most inclusions are microscopic and don't affect a diamond's beauty to the naked eye.
- FL-IF: Flawless to Internally Flawless
- VVS1-VVS2: Very Very Slightly Included
- VS1-VS2: Very Slightly Included (excellent value)
- SI1-SI2: Slightly Included (may be eye-clean)
Carat Weight: Size Matters
Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its size. One carat equals 200 milligrams. While larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, the cut quality significantly affects how large a diamond appears.
Pro tip: A well-cut 0.9 carat diamond can appear as large as a poorly cut 1.0 carat diamond, at a significantly lower price.
